The need is larger than most people realize

Millions of children are growing up with grief.

1 in 11

Approximately 1 in 11 children in the United States will experience the death of a parent or sibling before reaching age 18.

15.9 million

By age 25, approximately 15.9 million young people in the United States will have experienced the death of a parent or sibling.

Grief can affect concentration, emotional regulation, relationships, behavior, attendance, and academic progress. Its effects may also reappear as children reach new developmental stages and understand their loss in new ways.

Research has linked childhood parental bereavement with lasting educational challenges, reinforcing the need for schools to recognize grief and respond with informed, developmentally appropriate support.

Born from Mitchell’s light

When a child dies, a family’s entire world changes.

After the death of their 14 month old son, Mitchell, Kathryn and James Juneau experienced how quickly families can be left searching for practical help, trustworthy resources, and people who understand that grief does not end after the funeral.

The Orange Glow Project was created to walk beside families after child loss, not only in the first days, but through the birthdays, anniversaries, school years, and ordinary moments that can suddenly feel impossible.

“The orange glow reminds us that love remains and that even in the darkest season, no family should have to find their way alone.”
